Who Can Join
AmbCanada’s bylaws define the following criteria for Regular and Associate Members.
Regular Membership
- open to anyone who has served as a Head of Mission of a Canadian diplomatic or consular mission abroad, i.e., as Ambassador, High Commissioner, Consul General, or equivalent
- open to anyone who has served continuously as Chargé d’Affaires (acting Head of Mission) of a Canadian mission for one year
- also open to anyone who was formally designated by Global Affairs Canada as a Deputy Head of Mission
- requires end of full-time employment in the federal public service (whether through retirement or otherwise)
- grants eligibility to serve on the Board and its Committees and to have voting privileges
Associate Membership
- open to any spouse or partner of a former Head of Mission who is not currently a Regular Member, or is deceased
- enjoys a discounted membership fee
- does not require prior departure from the federal public service
- grants full membership privileges except the right to vote in meetings of the Board or at the Annual General Meeting
- grants eligibility to serve on the Board or any of its committees as a non-voting member
Spousal Membership
- open and free of charge to any spouse or partner of a Regular Member in good standing
- does not require prior departure from the federal public service
- grants full membership privileges except the right to vote in meetings of the Board or at the Annual General Meeting
- grants eligibility to serve on the Board or any of its committees as non-voting members
- must be converted to an Associate membership if/when the spouse ceases to be a Regular Member
